September sees the transition between summer and fall fruits and vegetables. Most summer fruit is still available this month, but not for long!
Apples are starting to come into season from now through November depending on the variety. The most common apples are Red and Golden Delicious, Fuji, Gala and Granny Smith. The popular ones are Envy, Honeycrisp and Sugar bee. Some varieties like McIntosh, Pippin, and Rome Beauty will come in later in the season right around the holidays, and they only last for a short time. Pears are also in season, some of the most popular varieties are the juicy and sweet Bartlett (green), firm and crunchy Bosc (brown) and the sweet Anjou (green or red).
Summer vegetables such as tomatoes, corn, and squashes are still strong this month but start to taper off quickly. As those fade out this month, fall vegetables ramp up. Although most of the vegetables are available almost all year round, some are much better in the fall -- like broccoli, celery, onions, sweet potatoes, and all winter squash.
